Deliveries of the Toyota Yaris have officially begun in India. Weren’t the prices announced in April? Yes. And the variants and their features too? Yes, again. Then what is this all about? We don’t know. Just get excited about it!
Here’s a basic rundown of everything we know about the new Toyota Yaris
Toyota’s Expectation
Toyota has announced that it intends on delivering 1,000 units of the Yaris to customers today, with over 4,000 units set to be delivered by end of May 2018. If this trend continues in the coming months, it could easily be one of the best selling cars in its segment, which currently includes the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and the Honda City. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is set to receive a comprehensive update, which will include a new set of petrol and diesel engines, closer to this year’s festive season. Both the Hyundai Verna and Honda City are new in comparison and may receive updates next year if they feel threatened by the latest sedan on the block.
No Yaris Hatch
Internationally, the Yaris is primarily sold as a hatchback. However, Toyota India has no plans to bring it to India anytime soon as it already has the Etios Liva here.
Price
You may know by now that Toyota has decided not to offer the Yaris with a diesel engine, at least for now. Instead, the Yaris comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed CVT automatic, both of which are available in four trim levels - J, G, V and VX. Prices of these eight variants (ex-showroom India) are as follows:
Toyota Yaris | ||
Variant | MT | CVT |
J | Rs 8.75 lakh | Rs 9.95 lakh |
G | Rs 10.56 lakh | Rs 11.76 lakh |
V | Rs 11.70 lakh | Rs 12.90 lakh |
VX | Rs 12.85 lakh | Rs 14.07 lakh |
The price comparison (petrol only)
Toyota Yaris | Maruti Suzuki Ciaz | Honda City | Hyundai Verna | Volkswagen Vento | Skoda Rapid | |
Price Range | Rs 8.75 lakh - 14.07 lakh | Rs 7.83 lakh - 10.63 lakh | Rs 8.72 lakh - 13.75 lakh | Rs 7.80 lakh - 12.56 lakh | Rs 8.43 lakh - 12.54 lakh | Rs 8.48 lakh - 12.21 lakh |
The Toyota Yaris is priced at a slight premium when compared to its competitors, but it does offer a lot of kit from the base variant. In a fight between the automatic variants of the Yaris, City and the Verna, the Hyundai emerged victorious. How? Read our comparison review to find out.
The Feature List
The Yaris’ biggest highlight is the list of features it is offered with as standard. This includes a big push for safety as it gets seven airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, and ISOFIX child seat anchor points. Equipment like projector headlamps, keyless entry, 4-speaker 2-DIN multimedia system, 60:40 split-folding rear seats, tilt-adjustable steering and manual height-adjustable driver seat are unique to the Yaris.
Some of the unique features such as the roof-mounted A/C vents for the rear passengers, acoustic and vibration cancelling glass, 4.2-inch colour MID are available from the G variant itself. Segment-first features include front parking sensors, tyre pressure warning, 8-way power adjustable driver seat.
Only Petrol
The Toyota Yaris is only available with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission (claimed fuel-efficiency of 17.1kmpl) or a 7-step CVT (claimed mileage of 17.8kmpl). As of today, we have only tested the CVT variant of the Yaris and here are some of the data from our tests:
Mileage - 16.4kmpl (City) / 16.3kmpl (Highway)
0-100kmph - 13.39 seconds
100-0kmph - 43.61 metres

The Looks
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and this is especially true in the case of the Yaris, which is capable of dividing opinion. Check out all of the images here.
