Update: The Yaris has made an entry into the official website of Toyota India. As mentioned at the Auto Expo 2018, it is available with just a 1.5-litre petrol engine but has the option of a 7-speed CVT automatic with paddle shifters right from the base variant. Key features include 7 airbags (standard), electronic seat adjustment (standard), all-four disc brakes (standard), roof-mounted AC vents and a TFT MID display in the instrument cluster. Bookings will start from April and the car is expected to be launched early in May.
Japanese bigwig Toyota has finally turned its attention to the thriving C-segment. At Auto Expo 2018, the manufacturer took the wraps off of the Yaris - its first all-new product for India this year. You will be able to book the sedan starting from April this year.
The Yaris is a step up from the Etios. And, it feels that way. In terms of size, it's rather generously proportioned at 4425mm x 1730mm x 1475mm (LxWxH). The 2550mm wheelbase isn't as big the City or the Ciaz, but room on the inside is properly appreciable.
Now, this doesn't really come as a surprise considering the Etios twins are roomy cars despite their tiny footprint. On the features front, the Yaris does get the basics ticked. 7 airbags and antilock brakes are standard across the range. Creature comforts include automatic climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen audio system, steering-mounted audio controls, leatherette upholstery, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPSM), front and rear parking sensors, hill start control, a reverse camera, powered seats and roof-mounted AC with ambient lights.
Speaking of engine options, the Yaris can be had with either a 1.5-litre petrol engine. Toyota states that the diesel engine isn't BSVI ready yet, so the Yaris will be available only with a petrol engine for now. This unit makes 108PS of power and 140Nm of torque. While transmission options include a 7-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual gearbox.
For Toyota to make an impact in this segment, the Yaris will need a compelling starting price. We're playing our bets on a Rs 7.5 lakh - Rs 11.5 lakh price range - which should make it a value proposition.
