According to the latest buzz from the paddock, Triumph Motorcycles will be the official engine supplier for the Moto2 class from the 2019 season onwards. A formal announcement regarding the same will be made soon, but it is safe to say that the future of the Moto2 class has been secured for now given the uncertainty of Honda’s replacement. Honda’s contract ends at the end of 2018 and Dorna, the regulating body, has been on the hunt for a new supplier for a long time. The Triumph motor is likely to be the new triple-cylinder engine that will be seen on the upcoming Triumph Street Triple and the Daytona sportsbike.
Japanese giant Honda has been the official engine supplier for Moto2 for a long time and the engine was based on the Honda CBR600RR sportsbike. But with the CBR600RR being withdrawn from the European market as it didn’t adhere to Euro 4 emission norms, Honda’s exit from Moto2 was assured too. It was certain that Moto2 will remain a single supplier class but the question was who would be that manufacturer. Kawasaki, MV Agusta and Triumph were the three names in the reckoning and it seems that the British brand has been favoured.
If Triumph does make this deal work, it will be wonderful news for the iconic bikemaker as it will be associated with the premiere class of racing and will join its European rivals, KTM and Aprilia. According to some reports, the Triumph Moto2 motor will have a displacement of 750cc and testing of the bike will commence during the 2018 season. We are awaiting an official word from Triumph Motorcycles -- watch this space for more updates.
