British bikemaker Triumph has issued a recall of over 1200 motorcycles sold in America. Documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, USA state that 1,242 units of the Triumph Triple R, Triple S and the Triumph Street Triple RS have been affected by a switchgear issue.
The affected models are said to be prone to water getting into the left-hand combination switch on the handlebar and cause the turn indicator switch and headlight switch to malfunction, which can be rather dangerous during the night. According to the recall documents, the left switchgear might not have been sealed properly during manufacturing and assembly. NHTSA documents state that the affected models only had a single layer of protective lacquering, which was installed during manufacturing. This can allow water to enter and short-circuit the electronics.
Currently, Triumph sells only the S and the RS variant of the Street Triple in India. Both use the same 765cc, in-line triple engine, however, the S variant produces 113PS of power and 73Nm of torque, while the RS produces 123PS of power and 77Nm of torque. The RS variant comes with a host of additional features like a quickshifter, five riding modes and more. Click here to read our impressions. The Triumph Street Triple S is currently priced at Rs 9.19 lakh while the Triumph Street Triple RS retails for Rs 11.13 lakh. (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).
Triumph is yet to make an official statement. However, officials have informed us that models in India have not been affected by the recall. But with monsoons around the corner, Triumph just might implement the recall here. In any case, we suggest you take your ride to the shop for a precautionary checkup before monsoons.
