The Triumph Street Triple was first launched globally in 2007, and since then has made a niche for itself in the middleweight naked performance motorcycle segment. The sweet combination of everyday practicality, exciting performance and brilliant dynamics have crowned this motorcycle as one of the best-selling middleweight naked motorcycles throughout the world. The fact that Triumph has sold over 50,000 units sold globally since its launch in 2007 explains it all. The bike did receive a small update in 2013, but barring a few cosmetic and mechanical changes, everything else had remained untouched till now.
Below, we list the top 5 facts about the 2017 Street Triple S that makes it stand out from its peers.
New Engine
The new Street Triple S gets an all new up-sized engine. Changes include new crank, pistons, connecting rods and balance shifter. The aluminium cylinder barrels have also been Nikasil-plated to reduce frictional loss. The bike is now powered by a larger 765cc three-cylinder 12-valve DOHC engine which is based on the Daytona’s 675R’s motor. It develops 113PS @ 11,250rpm and a peak torque of 73Nm @ 9,100rpm, and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.
The engine has been re-bored to increase the displacement while the longer stroke has now enhanced the motorcycle with more torque. It gets multipoint sequential electronic fuel injection with electronic throttle control. The new engine is more refined than the previous model and can also cruise at higher speeds without discomfort.
Electronics –
The Street Triple S gets ride-by-wire throttle response system for crisper throttle response, ABS, switchable traction control, two riding modes – rain and road, for better grip on changing road conditions, and the rider can also customise each riding mode along with his preferred traction control settings and ABS. The bike also gets LED position headlights for better visibility and self-cancelling turning indicators.
Cycle parts –
The new Street Triple S gets the same twin-spar frame as its predecessor, with a newly incorporated gullwing swingarm to increase torsional stiffness, which has improved the anti-squat performance on this bike compared to the previous model. Suspension duties are handled by Showa 41mm USD separate function forks (SFF) with 110mm travel at the front and Showa piggyback reservoir monoshock unit with 124mm wheel travel at the rear. The earlier model was equipped with KYB units which provided exactly same suspension travel.
The motorcycle gets twin 310mm floating discs with 2-piston Nissin sliding calipers at the front and a single 220mm fixed disc with Brembo single piston caliper at the rear same as the outgoing bike. It gets Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres with dimensions of 120/70 R17 at the front and 180/55 R17 at the rear.
Features –
The 2017 Street Triple S will continue with the semi-digital speedometer console. The design of the entire bike does not look remarkably different from the model it replaces but a closer look does point towards the attention given to details. The headlight is larger, while the tail section has been made more compact. The tank section, though, does maintain the same design flow as the previous model. The motorcycle also gets redesigned alloys and exhaust muffler and the overall design looks much more pleasing to the eye. The bike gets a saddle height of 810mm which is 10mm higher than the previous bike and weighs 166 kg which is 2kg lighter than previous bike. Fuel tank capacity remains the same at 17.4 litres.
Price and Rivals –
Triumph has not officially announced the Street Triple S’ pricing yet though we expect it to cost roughly around Rs 50,000 over the outgoing model, which takes it to Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will be offered in two colours – Diablo Red and Phantom Black. Once launched, the Street Triple S will face competition from the Kawasaki Z900, Ducati Monster 821, and the upcoming MV Agusta Brutale 800.
Note –
Triumph might also provide the motorcycle with 60 accessories that are offered globally with the motorcycle at extra cost. These might include Arrow exhausts, color-coded seat cowl, and swingarm protector kit, to name a few. Watch out to this space for the 2017 Street Triple S launch.
