After becoming the world’s fastest Triumph during the practice sessions at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Triumph Motorcycles will now be attempting to set a new motorcycle Land Speed World Record in mid-September. The British motorcycle manufacturer had managed to achieve a speed of 274.2mph (438.38kmph) during the practice sessions held earlier this month.
The record attempt will have the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner piloted by TT star Guy Martin. The current speed record stands at a whopping 376.363mph (605.697 kmph) at the 11 mile-long course and is held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack Streamliner.
Despite a good course surface during the test runs, the team felt that the salt surface would not be fully capable of withstanding the top-speed attempt. After approaching FIM course manager Mike Cook, the team have narrowed down to mid-September to have the best favourable conditions for the speed record attempt.
Speaking on the upcoming speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats, Vimal Sumbly, managing director, Triumph Motorcycles India, said: “All eyes are on Guy Martin and on the mid of September now. He has been working very hard and already has set the record of riding the fastest Triumph on the salt. We take this opportunity to wish him luck and hope he returns Triumphant.”
The Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner is a motorcycle that is 25.5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. It is powered by two turbocharged Triumph Rocket III engines that belt out a combined power of little above 1,000PS at 9,000rpm. The motors run on methanol and will be seen competing in Division C (streamlined motorcycle) category. The chassis of the Streamliner is built out of a carbon-Kevlar monocoque with Ohlins TTX35 adjustable shock absorbers to support the structure. The motorcycle runs on Goodyear ‘Land Speed Special’ tyres specially designed for the salt surface.
