Triumph India has announced that it will be launching the Triumph Trident 660 on April 6. It will be the most affordable Triumph bike in the country at an expected price of around Rs 7-7.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Official bookings opened back in November 2020 itself. The motorcycle will go up against the Kawasaki Z650 and the India-bound Honda CB650R.
Keen enthusiasts would know the base Triumph Street Triple S sold abroad packs a 660cc engine, instead of the 765cc triple on the other two R and RS variants. Triumph has used the same engine, albeit tuned differently to produce 81PS and 64Nm in the Trident 660. The engine is reined in by road and rain riding modes, switchable traction control, and a standard dual-channel ABS. It works alongside a 6-speed transmission with an assist-and-slipper clutch.
Triumph has also offered premium underpinnings in the form of a 41mm inverted Showa Separate Function Forks, preload-adjustable Showa rear monoshock, twin 310mm discs with Nissin axial calipers, a 255mm rear disc with Nissin single-piston caliper, and Michelin Road 5 tyres. Its feature list includes an all-LED lighting system and a TFT instrument cluster with optional smartphone connectivity.
At the moment, the premium 650cc streetfighter segment only has the Kawasaki Z650. Triumph intends to fill the void in this space with the Trident 660. It will also have the first-mover’s advantage as the Honda CB650R’s launch is still some time away. Compared to the Kawasaki Z650, the Trident’s superior electronics and feature package should make it stand apart. However, it will be priced at a premium compared to the Kawasaki Z650’s 6.04 lakh-rupee price tag (ex-showroom India).
