Twenty Two Motors, an EV startup which was founded in 2016, has unveiled its first electric scooter called the Flow. It packs in features that are unheard of in mass market two wheelers. The scooter makes use of AI (artificial intelligence) for customisable rider modes and utilises state-of-the-art sensors and the Internet to keep the vehicle connected to servers thereby enabling its users as well as the company to keep a track of your vehicle.
Twenty Two’s electric scooter is connected round-the-clock to their cloud-based system and can also be linked to a smartphone. Users can remotely track the vehicle and through the in-built Geo-fencing feature and can even shut down the vehicle with the smart APP if it has crossed the set geographical boundaries without the owner’s consent (basically theft).
While we’ve had electric scooters in the market earlier, none of them packs a motor that produces a max power of 2.8PS (2.1kW). It’s DC motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery which can be fully charged within a span of two hours, while a 10 minute charge will give you a range of 20km! The Twenty Two Flow can travel 80km on a single charge while achieving a top speed of 60kmph.
Higher variants will get the option of a dual battery and the company will even provide under seat storage space for two helmets and the extra battery, which extends the range of the scooter. Wait, that’s not it. The scooter also employs the high-tech KERS system found on F1 cars that adds an extra six per cent life to the battery while combined with the EBS (electronic braking system) that reduces braking distance by up to 60 per cent. The battery will have a 50,000km warranty and is manufactured along the guidelines mandated by the Indian government. To ensure ease of charging, the battery is as big as a hardbound notebook and can charged at any normal 5 amp wall socket.
Coming to its equipment list, the Flow gets telescopic suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, high tensile steel alloy wheels, and an all-LED headlight, taillight and turn indicators. Other stand out features include a drag mode where the 85kg scooter can be dragged in case of a tyre puncture, a reverse mode to aid in parking the scooter, programmable LED lights and cruise control.
Commenting on the unveil, Parveen Kharb, CEO and co-founder of Twenty Two Motors, said, “We are super excited to unveil the prototype of the Flow to the consumers in India. The Flow boasts of industry defining features which are going to be the benchmarks for others to follow. We conducted surveys and open houses for about 500 customers in Delhi NCR, Pune and Jaipur and the response was overwhelming. We have put an initial investment for an installed capacity of 10,000 units at our plant in Bhiwadi." He added that the company is looking at increasing the capacity of its manufacturing facility and that the first batch of the electric scooter would be rolled out sometime early next year.
Twenty Two Motors aims to showcase the production version of the Flow at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo and it is expected to priced in the range of Rs 65,000 to Rs 70,000. There are likely to be three variants with all the gizmos mentioned above. The company is also expected to introduce two more models in the next two years. The startup aims to sell around 50,000 to 60,000 units in the next one and a half years.
