The Grand i10 lacked the necessary safety features for child protection and thus scored only two stars in both adult and child occupant protection
  • The Grand i10 Nios was crash tested under the Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign.

  • It scored 7.05 out of 17 in adult occupant protection and 15 out of 49 in child occupant protection.

  • It lacks ISOFIX anchorages and child restraint system, leading to the poor result in that area.

Hyundai’s Grand i10 is one of the latest victims to have been claimed by the Global NCAP crash test ratings. It came out of the test with a poor two-star rating. Its rival, the Maruti Suzuki Swift, met a similar fate when it went through the same testing regimen back in 2018.

Based on the test, Global NCAP has deemed the bodyshell integrity of the i10 unstable. The head and neck areas were fairly protected unlike the rest of the body parts which ranged from adequate to downright weak. The Grand i10 scored a 7.05 out of 17.00 in adult occupant protection and 15.00 out of 49.00 in child occupant protection. It received two stars out of five in both categories.

The test was conducted on the Sportz variant of the hatchback. It gets additional safety equipment like front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters and speed-sensing, impact-sensing door lock/unlock. The i10’s standard safety features includes dual airbags up front, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

The test was conducted according to standard Global NCAP norms where the i10 was made to crash at a speed of 64 kmph. The results depend on factors such as how the i10 does not offer three-point seat belts in all positions, leading to the dummies sustaining massive damage all around. The lack of ISOFIX anchorages and child restraint system meant the child seat for the child dummy had to be placed with the adult seatbelt on, resulting in inadequate protection.

Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios was tested under the Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia Campaign, which was introduced in 2014.
