  • The exteriors of both cars seem identical to their respective production versions.
  • The spotted test mules are likely to be the BS6 versions of the Tiago and Tigor.
  • Facelifted Tiago and Tigor are in the works.
  • Both cars are likely to be launched early next year.

Tata Motors has been testing the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sub-4m sedan in Pune. Since both vehicles are identical to their production versions, they could be serving as test beds for their upcoming BS6 versions. They were spotted when parked just outside Pune. We expect both cars to be launched early next year, in time for the April 1 deadline for BS6 norms. They are likely to be more expensive than their BS4 counterparts. The BS4 Tiago retails from Rs 4.4 lakh to Rs 6.77 lakh, while the BS4 Tigor comes in at Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 7.9 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

The Tiago is Tata’s entry-level hatchback and comes with two engines - a 1.2-litre petrol motor that churns out 85PS of power and 114Nm of torque and a 1.0-litre diesel good for 70PS and 140Nm. Power outputs may change in the transition from BS4 to BS6. In our market, the Tiago competes with cars such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10.

The Tigor is Tata’s sub-4m sedan offering. It is equipped with the same petrol and diesel motors as the Tiago. In India, it competes with the segment leader, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, as well as other sedans like the Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Ameo, and the Hyundai Xcent

It remains to be seen if Tata retains the diesel variants of the two cars in the BS6 era. Some manufacturers have been shying away from small oil burners due to the price disadvantage these variants will face after April 2020.

In addition to the BS6 variants of the two cars, Tata is also working on the facelifted Tiago and Tigor. These models are likely to make an appearance in 2020. Read our story about the upcoming Tiago here. While the facelifted cars were expected to come with BS6 powertrains, they are likely to be preceded by pre-facelifted BS6 cars. We expect the spotted cars to be revealed and launched ahead of April 1.
