The Indian automotive industry is a huge playground for SUVs. From sub-4m to full-sized ones, each segment is stacked with neck-to-neck rivals. To add to the fun, 2021 has a bunch of SUVs that cost less than Rs 20 lakh hitting the market! These include facelifted models, upgraded powertrains, and carmakers stepping into the sub-4m SUV segment for the first time. Take a look at what to watch out for in 2021 when it comes to SUVs:
Renault Kiger
Built on the same platform as the Nissan Magnite, don’t count the Kiger out as another rebadged SUV as both will have a different top hat. From what the spy shots, concept, and teaser tell us, the Kiger will command an identity of its own with a lengthy list of features and a funky design. In terms of pricing, expect it to be on the same lines as the Magnite, which retails from Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 9.97 lakh (ex-showroom). The Kiger will be launched in early 2021, probably in March.
Tata HBX
Tata first showcased the HBX at the Auto Expo 2020. Since then the micro-SUV has been getting some final touches in the lab and is expected to launch in early 2021. Evident from numerous spy shots, the HBX will get some eye-catching design elements when it is production-ready along with its official name. Expect it to be priced from Rs 5.5 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.
Second-Gen Mahindra XUV500
The next-gen XUV500 is set to get a luxury upgrade. Spy shots have revealed that the interior, including the large floating twin-screen infotainment system, is inspired by Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The main highlight however is the level 1 autonomous technology that is likely to be offered with the new XUV500 with features like auto emergency braking, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. It will be somewhat similar to what the MG Gloster offers, and will also claim the title for the most affordable SUV with autonomous technology. Expect it to be launched by early 2021 with a price tag starting from Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom).
Volkswagen Taigun/Skoda Vision IN Launch
Skoda and Volkswagen’s India 2.0 strategy will start with the launch of the Vision IN and Taigun SUVs. Underpinned by Skoda-VW’s new MQB-A0-IN platform, the SUVs are expected to launch by mid-2021, with the Taigun only reaching showrooms after its Skoda sibling, the Vision IN does.
The SUVs will join a stacked segment with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos along with competitively priced mid-size SUVs like Tata Harrier, and MG Hector as their competitors. Both SUVs are expected to be priced around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The Vision IN’s production name will be revealed in January 2021.
BS6 Tata Hexa
Tata’s people mover has been set to arrive in its BS6-compliant avatar ever since it was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. The BS6 Hexa will be offered with manual and automatic gearbox options when it goes on sale in early 2021. Prices are expected to begin from just under Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom).
MG Hector Plus 7-Seater Launch
The delayed launch of the Hector Plus 7-seater version means that we will now see it arrive in January 2021. The more practical version was supposed to be launched right after the 6-seater version, which was launched in July, but was instead delayed. Currently the Hector Plus retails from Rs 13.73 lakh to Rs 18.68 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect the 7-seater version to undercut the 6-seater’s pricing.
Mahindra XUV300 EV
Mahindra is set to offer a Tata Nexon-rivalling SUV in 2021. Based on the XUV300, the EV is expected to offer a range of over 300km (the Nexon EV does 312km). It was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. Expect it to be priced from around Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny
Maruti is likely to offer the five-door version of the fourth-generation Jimny in India. The Gypsy-successor could arrive in 2021. Maruti might also revive the Gypsy badge for the Jimny when it arrives, considering the Gypsy was a stretched version of the second-gen Jimny. It is expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.
While affordable SUVs are hogging the spotlight, there are some SUVs which tiptoe on either side of the Rs 20 lakh line, enjoying the best of both worlds. These include the Jeep Compass, which will get a facelifted version on January 7, and the Harrier-based Tata Gravitas which will launch early in February 2021 after a long delay. The starting price for both these models sits comfortably below the Rs 20 lakh mark, with the facelifted Compass priced a premium over the current version’s starting price of Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Gravitas expected to be priced from Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. However, the higher variants for both these models are expected to cross the Rs 20 lakh mark.
