The Ural really is a timeless motorcycle motorcycle--and by “timeless” I mean one that’s basically remained unchanged (for the most part) for the last 80 years. Even looking at a brand new one today puts you at a risk of shellshock from being mentally transported to the knee-deep snow and muck of the Eastern Front of the Second World War. After all, that’s literally where this off-road-capable, permanent sidecar-toting motorcycle, based on the BMW R71, was born.

Ural still makes these motorcycles and they’re available in various versions, as long as that version looks like it's straight from the 1940s, has a sidecar and has selectable two-wheel drive. These versions (if one can call them that… they’re basically paint schemes with some doodads) range from ones inspired by the NS Yamal nuclear icebreaker to even the International Space Station. And the latest version to roll out of Ural’s factory is the GEO Limited Edition based on the GearUp.
This edition features a grey camo paint scheme (like you see on the Royal Enfield Himalayan Sleet), with some orange bits thrown in for good measure. The orange paint adds so much pizzaz to the bike that the only way the camo scheme would be able to camouflage the motorcycle is if it were part of an urban art installation. In fact, it could be the art installation all by itself considering that the camo scheme is uniquely hand painted on each one of these GEOs. And top top things off it gets upgraded adjustable Nitron suspension, Heidenau tires, an optional high-mounted GPR exhaust and a RotopaX jerry can.

It’s a shame that this Ural comes in such an exquisite paint scheme, because we’re certain it’ll dissuade potential owners from doing what the Ural does best: riding off-road. It might only come with a 749cc boxer twin engine that makes a wheezy 41PS and 57Nm, but over the years Ural has perfected the “off-road-with-sidecar” formula to the point where these motorcycles are not only unequivocally cool, but actually great at mud-plugging.
Now before you start lusting after one, understand that Ural is only building 20 of these GEO Limited Editions. And they’re rather expensive. Where the standard GearUp retails for USD 17,459 (approx Rs 12.80 lakh), the GEO costs a cool USD 26,999 (approx Rs 19.80 lakh). And they’re probably already all sold out by now. For all you know, Ewan McGregor has bought another one of these to ferry one of his dogs around.
