Both cars have been discontinued in India with the BS6 norms coming into effect from April 1
  • Ameo was powered by a 1.0-litre MPI and 1.5-litre TDI engine.
  • Tiguan was available with the sole option of a 2.0-litre TDI engine.
  • The 7-seater Tiguan Allspace will serve as a replacement for the standard Tiguan.
  • Ameo was priced from Rs 5.94 lakh to Rs 10.00 lakh (ex-showroom).

Volkswagen India has silently discontinued the Ameo and Tiguan in India. Both the cars have been removed from Volkswagen India’s official website. The sub-4m sedan Ameo was launched in India back in 2016, while Tiguan debuted here in 2017.

The Ameo was Volkswagen’s answer to the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. The sedan packed a 1.0-litre MPI engine and a 1.5-litre TDI unit. Gearbox options ranged between a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG (diesel only). The petrol engine was good enough for 76PS and 95Nm of twist while the diesel put out a healthy 110PS and 250Nm of torque. Volkswagen has not updated the oil burner to comply with the upcoming BS6 emission norms. That said, the 1.0-litre engine is already available in its BS6 guise in the Polo.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen offered the Tiguan in India with the sole option of a 2.0-litre TDI unit mated to a 7-speed DSG. This diesel engine has also not been updated. The recently launched Tiguan Allspace comes with a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine that puts out 190PS of power and 320Nm of torque. If Volkswagen brings back the 5-seater Tiguan, expect it to be powered by this engine.

The absence of BS6-compliant powertrain options is one of the primary reasons why Volkswagen has pulled the plug on both models. This coupled with the poor sales numbers of both the cars led to the move. Although Volkswagen has discontinued the Tiguan, the 7-seater Tiguan Allspace will fill its gap. It comes at a premium of Rs 1.6 lakh in comparison to the range-topping Tiguan TDI Highline variant at Rs 33.13 lakh. The Ameo was priced from Rs 5.94 lakh to Rs 10.00 lakh (ex-showroom).
