If reports are to be believed, the deliveries of the highly awaited Volkswagen Ameo are expected to start by July, 2016. The Ameo will be the first sub-4 metre compact sedan offering from the German manufacturer. The car made its first global debut in February, prior to the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The car has been engineered and designed by Volkswagen specifically keeping the Indian user in consideration. The Made in India Ameo will be manufactured at the VW Chakan plant in Pune.
The front of the Volkwagen Ameo is identical to the Polo hatchback model. The difference is observed at the rear where the boot section has been extended beyond the C-pillar. The interiors of the Ameo are very similar the Polo as well. Its will be equipped with ABS and airbags as standard in every single model as the Polo and the Vento models. Other safety features will include ABS braking and EBD.
The Ameo will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol will be a 1.2-litre engine with a power output of 75PS and 110Nm of peak torque. The diesel on the other hand, will be a 1.5-litre mill that will produce 90PS of max power and 230N of peak torque. Initially, both the engines of the Ameo will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox while a DSG variant could be offered later.
The Volkswagen Ameo will take its place between the Polo hatchback and Vento sedan in the market. It will compete against the likes of the Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, and the Ford Figo Aspire in the sub-4 metre compact sedan segment. The Ameo is expected to be launched at a starting price of Rs 5.5 lakh for the base model while the top-end variant is likely to be priced around the Rs 8.5 lakh mark, ex-showroom.
