Volkswagen showcased its compact sedan, the Ameo, a day before the 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi. It will fill the gap between the Polo hatchback and the Vento sedan in Volkswagen’s lineup.
Volkswagen dealerships throughout the country have already started taking bookings for the Ameo with a token amount of Rs.10,000. We expect this compact sedan to be launched in the first half of June this year. Volkswagen has also created an app for the Ameo on Google Play on which one can pre-book the car and go through the car’s specifications.
Variants of the Ameo have already been revealed. It will be offered in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline variants just like its hatchback and sedan siblings. Safety wise, dual-front airbags and ABS will be standard throughout the range.
The top-end Comfortline variant will be loaded to the gills with features like alloy wheels, dual barrel headlamps (different sections for high beam and low beam), chilled glove box, fog lamps with cornering function, reverse parking sensors with camera, touchscreen infotainment system and a few more.
Under the hood of the petrol variants of the Ameo will be a 1.2-litre engine (the same as the Polo) which produces 75PS of power along with 110Nm of torque. The diesel variants will be powered by VW’s tried and tested 1.5-litre engine which produces 90PS of power along with 230Nm of torque.
However, if reports are to be believed, VW will launch the Ameo only with a petrol engine initially as the 1.5-litre diesel engine is currently being updated.
We can expect the prices to start just shy of Rs. 5 lakh and go all the way up to Rs. 9 lakh for the top-spec diesel variant. When launched, the Ameo will take on the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest in the compact sedan segment.
