Volkswagen Ameo Variants Explained

Launched with a started price of Rs 5.24 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), the Ameo is Volkswagen's answer to the booming compact sedan market of India

Volkswagen has finally launched its much-awaited compact sedan, the Ameo, in the Indian market. The car comes at a starting price of Rs 5.24 lakh for the base variant that goes upto Rs 7.05 lakh for the top-spec model (both ex-showroom, New Delhi). The 'Made in India' offering by Volkswagen is currently being offered only with petrol engine option. The 1.2-litre engine is capable of putting out 75PS of power and 110Nm of peak torque. The motor comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. A diesel variant will soon be launched and will come with an option of 7-speed DSG transmission. 

Volkswagen Ameo - Rear

In terms of appearances, the Ameo looks very similar to the Polo hatchback by the German manufacturer. Beyond the C-pillar, the car has an extended stubby boot section that has been incorporated well and does not look out of place. It has the same grille and headlight design as the Polo. The car stands on 16-inch split five-spoke wheels which go well with the profile of the car. The car is offered in five colour options that consist of - Blue Silk, Reflex Silver, Toffee Brown, Candy White and Carbon Steel.

The Volkswagen Ameo is available in three trims - Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Following is the variant-wise low down on the Ameo.

Volkswagen Ameo - Profile

Trendline: 

This is the base variant of the Ameo that carries a sticker price of Rs 5.24 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The car will come equipped with all the standard features like body coloured bumpers, door handles and side mirror covers. The side mirrors come with manual adjustment and feature side indicators on its body. The windshield comes with heat-insulating glass. 

Inside the cabin, the base variant of the Ameo has black interiors and comes with power windows at the front, and single-folding rear seat backrest (segment first). It has standard features like central locking, air-conditioning, electronic engine immobiliser, tilt and telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel and speed-sensitive electronic power steering.

On the safety front, all variants of the Ameo come with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and dual airbags for the driver and passenger as a standard fitment.

Comfortline:

Carrying forward the above mentioned equipment list from the Trendline variant, the Comfortline has been priced at Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). This variant gets dual beam headlamps, remote controlled central locking, anti-pinch all four power windows. Inside, the compact sedan gets dual-tone interiors with ‘Desert Beige’ fabric seat covers. It also gets cooled glovebox, ambient lights, height adjustable driver seat and electrically-adjustable side mirrors. 

From this variant onwards, the Ameo gets cruise control which is another segment first by the manufacturer. The instrumental cluster comes with an additional monochrome multi-function display while an audio unit makes its place in the centre console and comes with four speakers with USB, AUX, Bluetooth and i-pod connectivity.

Volkswagen Ameo

Highline: 

This is the top-spec variant of the Ameo and it carries almost all features of the other two variants. The Highline model of the Ameo is priced at Rs 7.05 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). On the exterior, the car gets the additional chrome detailing at the front and chrome appliquéd on door handles. Only the top-spec model of the Ameo is equipped with alloy wheels. Inside, the centre console gets a brushed aluminium finish, chrome accents and leather wrapped steering wheel and gearknob. 

Feature-wise the Highline variant comes packed with equipment like reverse parking sensors with camera, front armrest, rear AC vent, climate control, electrically-foldable side mirrors and automatic rain-sensing wipers, another segment first addition by Volkswagen. Further on, it also gets speed-sensing auto door locks, auto-dimming rear view mirror, static cornering lamps and a rear de-fogger.

For the infotainment system, this model gets a touchscreen display with additional SMS viewer and MirrorLink. It also has steering mounted audio controls and voice command.

In India, the Ameo has been launched with a very competitive price tag which is even lower than Volkswagen's Polo hatchback. In the compact sedan market, the Ameo rivals the Maruti Suzuki DZire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.
