Volkswagen took the wraps off its I.D. Buzz concept at the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach, California. The automaker confirmed that the Buzz is on track for 2022 production.
The lemon yellow I.D. Buzz borrows its lines from the Microbus and makes the cabin feel roomier than before, with huge slabs of glasses for a bigger greenhouse. How many of those panels will stay and which ones will be shown the door in the name of budget and practicality remains to be seen.
Although the Buzz is still at concept stage and about half-a-decade away from production, the specimen at the Pebble Beach was fully functional. The concept has an electrically retractable rectangular steering; just push the VW logo in the centre to toggle its position. This feature makes it ready for the future when all cars will drive themselves. The front seats also rotate 360 degrees to allow all passengers to talk face-to-face while the car drives itself.
The Buzz is said to pack a range of over 400km and 350PS under the belly. It's targeted at the North American, European and Chinese markets. Volkswagen CEO Derbert Diess says that this van fuses the past and the future, the style of the Pebble Beach and the brains of the Silicon Valley.
Volkswagen's electric car family will also include the I.D., Cross, Lounge and AEROe. The German automaker hopes to have as many as 30 electric vehicles on sales by 2025. Volkswagen hasn't yet revealed its plans to bring electric cars to India, but some of those 30 electric cars may make it to the showroom floors in India.
