German manufacturer to explore the option based on sales trends for both the SUVs in India

  • VW has started its India 2.0 assault with the Tiguan Allspace and T-ROC.
  • The first shipment of the VW T-ROC has been sold out.
  • VW has sold 50 per cent of the Tiguan Allspace’s first shipment.
  • Local manufacturing for both models are being considered for more volumes and competitive pricing.

Volkswagen India is expected to be aggressive in following its India 2.0 strategy with SUVs being the number one priority. The German carmaker has started its assault with the Tiguan Allspace and the recently launched T-ROC midsize SUV. Both SUVs are offered as completely built units (CBU) under the government’s revised norms which allow car manufacturers to import 2,500 cars without homologation. If Volkswagen considers local manufacturing for both models, it could further achieve competitive pricing and an increase in volumes.

Volkswagen India will utilise this particular norm to closely monitor sales of both models and will make a decision on whether or not the vehicles will be locally manufactured with imported components.

Going by reports, things seem to be positive for the German carmaker. The T-ROC and Tiguan Allspace have performed impressively in the Indian market despite being petrol-only models. VW has sold 50 per cent of the Tiguan Allspace. The T-ROC, on the other hand, has been completely sold out.
