Volkswagen has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will be issuing a voluntary recall of 26,452 2014 car models, which are powered by the 1.8-litre turbocharged engines. Volkswagen has decided to recall these vehicles due to a bad O-ring issue affecting the automatic transmission oil cooler.
The recall has affected vehicles including the Jetta, Passat, Beetle, and Beetle convertible built between February 1, 2014 and April 6, 2014. The issue is limited to Volkswagen cars powered by 1.8-litre turbocharged engines. According to the German carmaker these affected vehicles feature bad O-ring seals in the transmission air cooler. The automaker says that the O-ring does not completely seal between the oil cooler and transmission, due to which, the leaking fluid has a potential to cause a vehicle fire.
The German car manufacturer has blamed a material change from a supplier to be the cause of this problem. So far, no vehicle fires, accidents or injuries have been reported. The carmaker will replace the defective O-ring with a new one without levying any cost on its customers. Volkswagen will notify its customers to contact the dealers for the O-ring replacement.
Volkswagen says that the issue of the leaking fluid in a car was first reported on March 14, last month. The carmaker informed its dealers to stop the sales of the 2014 models after investigating this issue.
