Volkswagen once again makes it into the news for its engines, this time in positive light though. The German car maker has taken the wraps off a new engine that promises better power, improved efficiency and reduced emissions. The Wolfsburg-based car maker unveiled the latest generation of its petrol engines, codenamed EA211 TSI evo, at the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium recently.

The first of the engines to be produced in this family will be a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit. This engine will be available in two states of tune - 131.8PS and 152PS and will replace the current 1.4-litre TSI unit. This new engine features a Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) and just like the latest A4, it gets a Miller Cycle combustion in combination with a high compression ratio for improved efficiency.

To deliver a broader torque curve than typically possible from a single turbo, the VTG allows the turbine blades to adjust. This is the same technology that is already being used in the Porsche 911 Turbo and the new Cayman, however, the EA211 evo introduces it in more affordable engines.

Volkswagen has also fitted this new engine with a Cylinder Deactivation system which shuts off half of the engine when at cruising speeds. Although VW hasn’t declared their official efficiency claims yet, they claim the new engine to be 10 per cent more efficient than the old 1.4.

This new 1.5 will be making its debut in the international markets later this year and will replace the current generation 1.4-litre TSI. Currently, the 1.4 TSI is being used in the Volkswagen Jetta and the Skoda Octavia. Although VW hasn’t made an official statement till now, we expect the new engine to be featured in both these car models along with some of the upcoming SUVs like the T-Roc and the T-Cross.
