Last month, Volkswagen Motorsport announced the introduction of the Vento Cup this year instead of the popular Polo R Cup. The touring car series will be a part of the 18th JK Tyre Racing Championship. The German car maker has now got the ball rolling with the dates of the first official selection for the racing series this year. Registrations are open on the Volkswagen Motorsport India website as the first round of the selection process has been scheduled for the February 14 and 15 at the Indy Karting Track in Kharadi, Pune.
By conducting this selection process via a series of go-karting sessions Volkswagen has in fact made a smart move and provided a platform for potential racing drivers to showcase their skill. The selection will be conducted by karting champion Rayomand Banajee. Drivers who make it to the selection process will have to pay a refundable deposit of Rs 5,000.
Sirish Vissa, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport India, commented “This year, we are shifting our selection process to karting which is the grass-root level of driving cars. It brings out the raw skills of the drivers and helps us in identifying the real talent. We have already upped the game with the Vento race car this year and we expect to churn out some more champions through our Vento Cup programme this year.”
The drivers selected in Round 1 will then graduate to the second round of selection which will be held on February 28 and March 1. Following both the rounds, the drivers that will be competing in the inaugural Vento Cup later this year will be announced.
