Volkswagen India manufactured the 3,00,000th car of its Pune plant on Monday. The car was a left-hand-drive version of the Volkswagen Vento that will be exported to the AGCC market.
The Pune plant, whose construction began in 2007, was completed in 17 months and the first car rolled out in May 2009. The plant has a manufacturing capacity of 1.30 lakh cars per year and cars like the Volkswagen Polo and Vento and Skoda Fabia and Rapid are manufactured here. The Group has been exporting cars to more than 30 countries across two continents – Asia and Africa, from this plant.
Speaking on the occasion, Andreas Lauenroth, Executive Director Technical, Volkswagen India, said, “It is a double celebration for Volkswagen India. We have achieved a new milestone with 3 lakh cars being produced at our Pune facility. Also, the Vento is a left-hand drive car for export which highlights the
acceptance of an Indian product worldwide...I would like to congratulate the entire team of Volkswagen India which has contributed greatly to achieve this landmark today.”
Mahesh Kodumudi, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India, said, “The Vento in itself is a milestone for Volkswagen in India. Though it was a car designed and built for India, it got wide acceptance in the international market as well and slowly grew to reach even the left-hand drive markets. Today, this car has achieved another milestone by being the 3,00,000th car to roll out of Pune plant.”
The Volkswagen Group is represented by five brands in India: Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda, and Volkswagen. The Group has been present in India for the last 12 years and began its India journey with the entry of the Skoda brand in 2001. Each brand has its own character and operates as an independent entity in the market.
