After launching the next generation models like the XC90 and the S90, Volvo is now bringing us the V90 Cross Country. It has a beefed up ground clearance and plastic cladding all around to give owners a sense of rugged personality, which will encourage buyers to take it on cross country trips. Boosting its go-anywhere credentials is the all-wheel-drive system, which improves traction on slippery surfaces and limits understeer.
The car still lacks what we'd call the 'SUV appeal'. While there are customers who prefer a car that does more and talks less, the majority still prefers a poser. Seeing a V90 Cross Country in the rear-view mirror isn't going to scare anyone.
Underneath all of that estate goodness is the same chassis and powertrain as the S90 sedan. The 2.0-litre diesel engine in the V90, however, is in the D5 state of tune compared to the S90's D4 mode. It makes 235PS of power and 480Nm of torque. That's 45PS and 80Nm more than the S90. The PowerPulse technology is there to negate the turbo lag, and it does what it says. Compressed air helps spool up the turbo instantly in low-RPM situations.
The S90 will also get the radar and safety kit, which brings features like:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Pilot assist
- Lane keep assist
- Park pilot assist
- Front collision warning with full automatic braking
Other features of the V90 Cross Country include LED headlamps, 4-zone climate control, Bowers and Wilkins 19-speaker audio system, massaging front seats, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, full-colour LCD instrument cluster and a head-up display.
The Volvo V90 Cross Country is expected to carry a price tag of about Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom).
