Volkswagen Motorsport India has picked 15 drivers to compete in the brand new Volkswagen Ameo Cup that will take place in 2017. VW Motorsport selected the drivers on December 17 and 18, for the series, at the Indi Karting track in Kharadi, Pune. The Ameo Cup is a one-make series that will be hosted as a part of the FMSCI-MMSC Indian National Racing Championship. A total of 20 drivers will form the grid at the 2017 Ameo Cup and the remaining 5 drivers will be picked from the previous season of the VW Vento Cup.
More than 600 aspirants registered for the Ameo Cup. The selection was done by two judges - Rayomand Banajee, driving coach for VW Motorsport India and Sirish Vissa, head of VW Motorsport India. The participants were judged on the basis of their overall driving skills covering performance consistency, understanding of racing lines, driving attitude, lap times and ability to learn. The participants were briefed about the techniques they could put to use during the two days of the selection process. They were also put through a fitness session to test their stamina and core physical strength. In addition to this, they were also told about the importance of sponsorship and the vital role it plays in the field of motorsports.
Sirish Vissa, head of Volkswagen Motorsport India, said, "Volkswagen Motorsport India has been committed to nurturing budding racing talent and it is pleasing to see such enthusiasm amongst youngsters from across country. We have seen some promising racing talent come forward this year and I look forward to seeing them put their learnings to practice in the competitive rounds. With the introduction of Ameo Cup, we expect to see more action on the tracks which will help take this the sport to the next level in this season."
