If someone wants to understand Audi, then its important to know about quattro.
The word quattro is derived from the Italian word for four, and that is exactly what it signifies. On an Audi, the quattro system is a full time four wheel drive system where power is distributed to the front and rear axles allowing for a lower power requirement and extremely well balanced handling. The quattro system also offers better traction and exceptional road grip thanks to the fact that all four wheels are powered.
What was first thought of by Audi engineers way back around 1977, the first quattro system emerged in Europe around 1980 and reached America by 1983. The instant success and desire for Audi quattro vehicles extended towards motorsport as well for many rallists opted for the four wheel drive system as it offered better handling, superior grip and the ability to traverse over slippery terrain better than any other rally vehicle of that time.
Over the years the quattro system has evolved and is an intrinsic part of the Audi brand name. Today’s quattro technology is capable of taking into account engine speed and torque, shifting drive torque from one wheel to another in the case of slipping, and continuously monitoring traction levels at each wheel in order to provide better acceleration, improved traction, higher safety and ultimately a heightened level of driving pleasure.
