Completely new models or just reworked petrol-powered Yamaha scooters?

Back in 2019, Yamaha debuted the E01 and E02 e-scooter concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show. And from the looks of it, one of these scooters is now nearing production. What leads us to believe so are the new trademarks filed by Yamaha for the E01 and the EC-05 electric scooters. The E02, unfortunately, didn’t make the cut.

The E01 maxi-styled scooter has performance comparable to that of conventional 125cc petrol-powered scooters. It is likely to be packed with features too; you could expect the scooter to have Bluetooth connectivity, ABS, swappable battery, and geo-fencing, among others.

While the EC-05 is yet to be launched in the global market, Yamaha already offers it in Taiwan. It is developed in partnership with Gogoro, a Taiwan-based e-scooter manufacturer. The EC-05, powered by a G2 Aluminum alloy water-cooled motor and a MOSFET water-cooled motor controller, is sold both in ABS and UBS (unified braking system, similar to the CBS) variants.

Output figures are 19.3 kW and 26Nm. While braking is handled by a 245mm front disc and a 190mm rear disc, the suspension setup comprises a telescopic fork and dual rear shocks. It features single-channel ABS and all-LED lights.

The EC-05 is priced at TWD 1,07,800 (approximately Rs 2,79,604) for the ABS version.

The design for the E01 seems to be approaching its final stages, with mass production likely to start soon. However, it’ll be some time before we get new deets on the E01. Until then, you can read our review on the homegrown Ather 450X.
