One of the biggest players in the bicycle business, Hero Cycles has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Yamaha and Mitsui to develop and manufacture electrically assisted bicycles for India. The product will be jointly developed after conducting a survey of local laws and consumer preferences.
An electrically assisted mountain terrain bicycle would be the first product coming out of the MOU. Under this arrangement, Yamaha will be providing the electric drive units (EDU) for the bicycles, while the cycles themselves will be designed and manufactured by Hero. Mitsui, on the other hand, will evaluate project feasibility, utilizing its network and expertise in the electric mobility field.
This partnership could benefit all the three companies gain deeper insight into the burgeoning segment. After all, India is gradually but certainly transitioning towards greener mobility, especially in the three/four-wheeler market.
Interestingly, Hero Cycles already sells the Lectro range under the electrically power-assisted cycle platform. We have already ridden the electrically assisted bicycle and were quite surprised! We have also reviewed the Tronx One, another player in the fledgeling electric bike segment.
Electrically assisted bicycles seem to be gaining popularity as they’re inexpensive and offer a hassle free experience.
