Yamaha has issued a recall for its entry-level sport bike – the YZF-R3. The recall has been initiated on the grounds of a defective clutch pressure plate assembly and a malfunctioning oil pump unit. Notably, the manufacturer had issued a similar recall in Japan for over 15,000 bikes to address the same issue.

Yamaha India issued a statement that read: “The YZF-R3 is an iconic bike and has been very successful in India. However, the parent company Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., Japan, has determined that a defect, which relates to Clutch Pressure Plate assy & Oil Pump assy malfunction, exists in few YZF-R3 motorcycles falling within certain production numbers."

Yamaha says that no safety issues have been reported from anywhere in India. It added, "Yamaha as a responsible corporate has decided to recall all the vehicles falling under the identified production numbers.  A total of 902 bikes will be recalled in India under Yamaha’s factory modification campaign."

The defective parts on the affected motorcycles will be replaced free of cost at authorised dealerships. “This recall is a reiteration of Yamaha’s commitment to safety of its customers and this action is not a result of complaints from customers, but more of a preventive measure to ensure the safety of the customers,” the statement added.

The Yamaha YZF-R3 retails for Rs 3.26 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and goes up against the likes of the KTM RC390 and the Kawasaki Ninja 300.
