Yamaha has recently announced the Star Eluder, an all new touring motorcycle based on the previously launched Star Venture model. What sets the Star Eluder apart, though, is the much smaller windscreen, some luxury features and a trunk. This has helped Yamaha to price the Star Eluder at $22,499 (Rs 14.37 lakh) for the standard model, and $24,999 (Rs 16 lakh) for the optional GT package. The Star Venture, on the other hand, sets you back by $24,999 for the standard option, and by $26,998 (Rs 17.28 lakh) for the Transcontinental Option package (Note- all prices mentioned are for the US market). The Eluder will be available in three different colour options - Impact Blue, Raven and Liquid Silver.
The Star Eluder comes equipped with the same air-cooled 1854cc V-Twin engine paired with a six-speed transmission, as seen on the Star Venture. It produces 170.8Nm of torque at just 2250 rpm. Yamaha has also utilised the same chassis of the Venture, which is a steel frame paired with an aluminum die-cast sub-frame. The bike comes with a 46mm telescopic fork and a remote preload adjustable rear shock. Braking is handled by dual 298mm discs at the front, and a single 320mm disc at the back (among the largest for a production motorcycle). ABS comes as standard, and so does Yamaha’s Unified Brake system which dynamically balances front and rear brake pressure for a more linear feel.
The bike has two riding modes - touring and sports. Traction control comes as standard and so does cruise control, which is set to come only with the touring model. The Eluder comes with a 7-inch touchscreen LCD infotainment system, which can also be controlled via handlebars and voice commands. Yamaha has ensured that you will not get bored on longer rides by equipping the Eluder with a radio package which can stream music via Pandora from your smart phone. However, your pillion does not share the same luck as the rear speakers of the Star Venture are missing. There are also tonnes of other standard features like a smart key system, USB ports and a 12V outlet. If you opt for the GT option, you’ll also get a GPS navigation system, satellite radio, and a security alarm.
However, what’s lacking from the Eluder is the trunk, a passenger backrest, the reverse-drive sure-park system, grip heaters, electronically adjustable windscreen, tyre pressure monitor and fog lights. But, this does make the Eluder lighter at 396.8kg (397kg with GT option) as compared to 434kg of weight of the Star Venture. It is highly unlikely that the new Yamaha Star Eluder will come to India as the engine doesn’t comply with Euro 4/BS-IV emission norms.
