Going a step further in its battle against pollution, the Delhi Government outlined the contours of its ambitious new plan on Sunday as it said that odd-numbered vehicles will be allowed to ply only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday whereas even-numbered ones will run on the other days - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Going into the details of the plan that will be put in place from January 1 next year, Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain said that the Government will only allow emergency vehicles like PCR van, fire tenders and ambulances to run every day on the roads of the national capital. “On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, odd numbered vehicles will be allowed on roads in a week,” he said and added, “Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday will have even numbered vehicles on roads, and we don't care about which cars belonged to whom.”

Jain, who is also the PWD and health minister, added that there is a need to take strict measures to clean the city’s toxic air and the even-odd formula will also be applicable on all ministers and bureaucrats in the national capital region. “Odd-Even formula will also be applicable on all ministers and officers. I will also use my car on alternate days and will use carpooling service on other days,” Jain said.

With the arrival of the winter season, the smog levels have gone up dramatically in the NCR, which has urged the State Government to take such measures. The Kejriwal government has taken a strong stand against this issue ever since it came to power with the ‘Car free day’ movement also gathering steam every month.

However, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that the government would discontinue the move within 10 to 15 days if people faced problems because of it.  They have also sought people’s suggestions on the Government’s odd-even formula that can be sent on pollutionfreedelhi@gmail.com.
