This barebone electric motorcycle weighs 39kg and maxes out at 100kmph
  • Zooz is an American e-bike manufacturer.
  • It gets a skeletal frame and simple mechanicals.
  • It is just a concept, not heading into production anytime soon.
  • ‘Where is the motor? There’s nothing between you and the front wheel.’ That’s the first thought that popped into our mind when we laid eyes on Zooz’ latest electric concept. But as we delved deeper, the simplicity of the bike started to blow our minds away. It is sort of a mid-path between an e-bike and a full-blown electric motorcycle, slightly leaning towards the latter.

What is simply stunning is that Zooz took a pretty simple cycle frame, added a motorcycle-inspired swingarm, and thought that’s enough. And the result, mind you, is quite brilliant! It reminds you of the pre-World War I Harleys, Indians, and a few other British bikes that plonked a small motor into a cycle frame. The only difference is that the electric motor here is a hub-type unit. And whatever little bodywork you find on this bike, like the front cowl and the battery compartment beneath the seat, is made from carbon fibre.

The riding posture feels a bit awkward at first as unlike an e-bike, there is no seat-height adjustment, there seems to be quite a stretch to get to the low-slung bars and with no pedals, the foot-pegs are in a position where large riders might be on the constant end of a leg cramp. But this is still a concept, so we can let that slide.

So what can this electric concept do? It is powered by a 4.3kW hub motor. Details are scarce right now. However, we have two figures that would delight you. First, the weight, at 39kg makes it ridiculously light for an electric motorcycle. Second, its claimed top speed is 100kmph, quicker than all electric two-wheelers on sale in India. This potent package of a light body and a quick motor reminds us of the two-strokers like the Yamaha RX100, obviously without the enthusiast-loving/non-environment-friendly fumes.

Zooz is unlikely to put this into production. It is a unique idea that potential electric bikemakers should try and emulate to bring back simple motorcycling. We are on-board with the idea, are you?
