Is the 2021 model a mid-life update or an all-new offering? We compare it with the predecessor to find out

Aprilia launched the 2021 SR 160 in India earlier today, the online bookings for which have already commenced for a token amount of Rs 5,000. But how different is it from the older model and how much of a premium do you pay for the updates? Well, here’s a thorough breakdown.

Cosmetic Changes

Aprilia has revised the 2021 SR 160’s fascia and the front end now looks sleeker. It gets a new LED headlight and the handlebar cowl now features air vents. Meanwhile, the predecessor’s fascia appeared a bit too slim and the handlebar cowl didn’t get the ducts either. It also used the archaic halogen headlight.

The 2021 Aprilia SR 160 also gets a new split seat against the older single piece unit and the tail light is now an LED unit with an ‘X’ shape to it. Even the grab rail is chunkier than before.

For its latest iteration, the SR 160 borrows the fully digital cluster from the SXR 160. It’s an LCD unit housing the speedometer, tachometer, average fuel efficiency reading, distance to empty, trip meter, fuel level readouts and an average and top-speed display. For Rs 2,000 more, you can also make it Bluetooth compatible and have access to call and SMS alerts. On the other hand, the previous-gen SR 160 featured an analogue-digital instrument cluster housing only the speedometer, trip meter, fuel level readout, odometer and tachometer.

Besides, the 2021 model also gets a USB charging port and an LED boot light, while the SR 160 Race variant also gets knuckle guards as standard.

Now, though the 2021 model has quite a bit to offer, the fact that its engine and underpinnings are carried over unchanged from its predecessor means the added premium feels a bit too high. Besides, the fact that the Bluetooth connectivity is a paid extra further sours the deal.

Ultimately, the enthusiast in us wishes Aprilia would’ve offered turn-by-turn navigation and a small power bump, so as to make the 2021 SR 160 just a bit more attractive.
