The Maruti Suzuki Dzire. A humble subcompact sedan is so much more than what it seems. This car is literally an emotion; even its name says so. But it seems this emotion has been suppressed for quite some time now. It needs a revival, and an apt one at that.
It’s been four years since Maruti gave it a proper update, but with the new-gen Swift just around the corner, there might be hope for the Dzire as well. Nope, no confirmation as of now, but it just makes sense for Maruti to do it, despite the trend flocking towards SUVs. Why? We’ll tell you why:
The Dzire has constantly been the highest selling sedan in India. In fact, moving beyond its segment, the Dzire has even made it to the list of top 10 highest selling cars a month on multiple occasions. The Maruti Dzire was the sixth highest selling car in India in 2023 and it racks up more monthly sales than a few carmakers' combined lineup. Brilliant, considering that it’s the only sedan managing to do so in a market trend where SUVs are favoured left, right and centre. This sole reason should be good enough to bring a new-generation model for the Dzire.
We all know the popularity of the Maruti Swift. It is one of the highest, if not the highest selling car in India. Considering that the Dzire is nothing but a Swift with a boot, it poses an alternative for people wanting to make weekend trips with their family, helping them store their luggage without a sweat. The package is literally identical to the Swift, just with an added pinch of practicality and convenience.

The current prices for the Maruti Dzire range between Rs 6.51 lakh and Rs 9.38 lakh (ex-showroom). For under Rs 10 lakh, you get a car that looks stylish (subjective but still true); has enough space for four, a decent list of features including a touchscreen system; Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and rear AC vents; and a more than decent boot space for a family’s weekend luggage. And with the next-gen model, you can expect it to push boundaries when it comes to features on board. Considering that the Swift tilts slightly towards a sporty package, the Dzire offers a more family-oriented package with an even more comfortable ride and the aforementioned points. The only letdown is on the safety front, but Maruti could and should improve that with the new-gen model.

The Dzire has always been a fuel efficient car to drive and considering that the new-gen Swift gets a new 82 PS 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, teamed with a 12 V mild-hybrid system, the same could be offered with the new-gen Dzire. We reckon the mild-hybrid system might be given the axe to keep costs in check. And transmission options could include a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox. A CNG option should be on offer as well for people with a high running and looking for lower running costs.

All these reasons combined make more than a compelling argument for the birth of a new-gen Dzire. Four years is a long time for a car that’s still racking up plenty of sales numbers to not get an update of any kind. We hope you’re reading this, Maruti Suzuki. India wants, needs and deserves a new-gen Dzire.

If the green light is given, it could arrive sometime after the launch of the next-gen Swift. Of course, prices will be slightly higher than before, but it will continue to rival the Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor.
