In this edition of Zig’s performance-testing report, we line up the base engine options (with automatic transmissions) of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Skoda Kushaq. Both models take a completely different approach underneath the hood. The Maruti uses a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, while the Kushaq has a smaller three-pot motor, boosted with turbocharging.
Which one is quicker and more fuel efficient? Well, let’s find out.

Despite the Skoda having a smaller engine, thanks to turbocharging, the Kushaq is much more powerful and torquier than the Grand Vitara. However, the Maruti offering reclaims a few brownie points by offering mild-hybrid tech, which helps save fuel with a start-stop system and torque fill in certain instances.

The Kushaq’s more powerful engine, combined with a decently responsive torque converter automatic, manages to beat the Grand Vitara by almost two and a half seconds. Yes, the smaller TSI engine has turbo lag to beat through, but once it gets going, performance is strong and brisk.

In fact, turbo lag affects the Kushaq in the roll-on acceleration, where you can see, the timing is almost exactly the same as the Grand Vitara. So yes, the Kushaq wins this section, but what about fuel efficiency?

Turbo-petrol engines are known to be thirsty, especially when driven hard. But even while driving it sedately under our test conditions, the Kushaq’s smaller engine simply isn’t as fuel efficient as the Maruti’s. In town, the Grand Vitara is almost 1.3kmpl more efficient than the Kushaq, while that number rises to almost 3kmpl on the highway. So while the Grand Vitara might be lacking in performance, it makes up for it with better fuel economy.

Rs 11.29 lakh to Rs 19.49 lakh |
It makes sense to call this test a tie. The Skoda Kushaq, with its better on-road performance and involving handling, should be your pick if you want a fun-to-drive SUV. However, if it’s fuel efficiency that you’re looking after, the Grand Vitara, staying true to Maruti Suzuki’s values, is the one you should consider.
