In the latest installment of Zig’s performance and ‘kitna deti hai’ comparo, we lineup the Grand Vitara mild-hybrid and the Brezza automatics. Though one might be a compact SUV and the other, a sub-four-metre SUV, there is a lot in common between these two underneath their skin. They are based on the same platform and utilise the same 103PS 1.5-litre petrol engine and six-speed auto ‘box.
So which one is quicker and sips the least amount of petrol? Well, let’s find out.
Lights out and away we go. Both models get away from the line well and despite putting out the same amount of power, it’s the Grand Vitara that managed to trump the Brezza in the nought to 100kmph dash. Even during the roll-on acceleration test, the Brezza was a tenth of a second slower than the Grand Vitara. These differences are so miniscule that one might not even feel it on the open road.
Parameters |

Maruti Brezza* |
0-100kmph |
15.13 seconds |
15.24 seconds |
20-80kmph |
8.48 seconds |
8.58 seconds |
*Tested in wet conditions
While these figures are borderline acceptable for the Brezza, they paint a dull picture for the Grand Vitara. Both SUVs have competitors with turbo-petrol engines which are much quicker and hence feel a lot more effortless to drive.

Once again, like the performance comparison, things are very close when it comes to fuel efficiency. In fact, in town, the larger Grand Vitara managed to marginally trounce the Brezza by almost 0.2kmpl. However, things were vice versa on the highway, where the Brezza bettered the Grand Vitara by 1.5kmpl. We suspect the difference in tuning of these engines could be the reason for this outcome.

Maruti Brezza |

13.72kmpl |
13.53kmpl |

20.5kmpl |
This is one place where both SUVs redeem themselves. Yes, the performance sits at the bottom end of the segment, but Maruti, sticking true to its customer values, is offering better fuel efficiency.

In the confines of this test, the Grand Vitara betters the Brezza in three out of four aspects, and that’s why it wins this test. The difference however, is marginal.
