The commercial vehicles depart of Tata Motors rolled out the Tata Winger Van in 2007,the only such vehicle offering from any manufacturer in India. Initially launched with a 14 seat capacity, the van found acceptance amongst schools, institutions, hospitals and a number of corporates. Total sales over the past three years have amounted to a total of almost 18,000 units till date, however the company has plans on changing this equation with the advent of the Winger Platinum.
The Tata Winger Platinum is a result of specific passenger and user feedback. An extensive amount of research has gone into the new variant in order to make it more customer friendly and therefore hopefully boost demand.
The new Winger Platinum boasts of having seven captain seats that be individually reclined. Though the vehicle dimensions remain the same as the earlier Winger, the interiors now have a lot more room and offer an elite travel opportunity rather than a more crowded situation. Each seat has its own arm rest and there are individual air-conditioning vents for each seat as well. The interiors boast of better materials and functional tools such as coat hooks and two mobile charging ports in the passenger area. The Winger Platinum also features a 2-DIN audio system with 4 speakers with a provision of housing an LCD screen, should the vehicle need to be customized in such a manner. Ingress and Egress have been improved by the addition of a neat new sidestep.
Apart from these features, the Winger Platinum is still powered by a tried and tested 2 liter turbo charged intercooled diesel engine that offers decent power. The chassis boasts of a rugged sub frame, anti-roll bars to take on bad roads. NVH levels have been kept to a minimum thanks to decent packaging.
Considering the changes made to the Winger, Tata Motors is keen on targeting the hospitality and travel and tour segment with this new product. The size and space of the Winger allows for comfortable travel on long distances and it makes for the ideal holiday vehicle for large families. As far as intra-city usage is concerned, the Winger Platinum works as a brilliant office van for working executives. Incidentally the Winger Platinum can also be purchased for private usage, however that is not a focus area for Tata Motors at present, as the company is looking at building their prominence in the 6-8 seater commercial passenger vehicle category.
Available with a 1.5 lakh kilometer/18 month warranty, the Winger Platinum is priced at Rs. 6,97,593/- for the BS III variant and Rs. 7.35.055/- for the BS IV variant. (All prices are ex-showroom Delhi). Tata Motors is looking at selling over 7,500 units of the Winger Platinum in the coming year.
