Endeavour vs Fortuner vs Alturas G4 vs MU-X: Comparison Review

The 2019 Endeavour, which was recently launched in India, gets some nifty feature additions, minor cosmetic upgrades and revised prices that make it an even better value proposition than before. However, the 2019 Endeavour is still offered in India with the same set of engines as the outgoing model. This isn’t the case with its cousin from the land down under. Sold as the mighty Everest in Australia, the SUV gets the new 2.0-litre twin-turbo EcoBlue diesel engine under the hood in addition to the 3.2-litre, 5-cylinder diesel engine sold here. But is it the only major difference between the two? We find out in our comparison of the top-spec SUVs.

As you can see from the table above, both the Endeavour and the Everest are almost identical in terms of size and space. The SUVs are full sized behemoths that can seat seven people and get a pretty intimidating road presence as well. While the Endeavour has the same width, wheelbase and height as the Everest, the top-spec Australian version is slightly longer (by 66mm). It also has a miniscule advantage in terms of the ground clearance (by 2mm). Overall, there is hardly any major difference between the two SUVs when it comes to size and road presence, with both being equally menacing.

The 2019 Endeavour continues to be powered by the same set of 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre diesel engines as its recently retired predecessor. The 2.2-litre motor is offered with a 4x2 drivetrain with both MT and AT options, while the 3.2-litre motor is exclusively offered with 4x4 and AT. The 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder unit produces 160PS of power and 385Nm of peak torque, while the 3.2-litre, 5-cylinder unit churns out 200PS and 470Nm. The Endeavour is sold in a total of three variants; Titanium Plus 3.2L, Titanium Plus 2.2L and the Titanium 2.2L.
In contrast, the 2019 Everest comes with two engine options - the 3.2-litre diesel (same as the Endeavour) and the new 2.0-litre twin-turbo EcoBlue diesel engine. While the 3.2-litre motor makes the same amount of power and torque as the Endeavour, the EcoBlue diesel engine is where the Everest scores over its Indian counterpart. Despite being smaller and having just four cylinders, this engine makes more power (by 13PS) and torque (by 30Nm) than the 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine with five cylinders.
While Ford has brought back the 6-speed manual transmission (in addition to the 6-speed automatic) with the 2019 Endeavour in India, the Everest gets both 6-speed and 10-speed automatic transmission options. Without a doubt, the new engine and transmission setup on the Everest score above the ageing diesel engines on the India-spec Endeavour, on paper at least.
Safety & Features
The new Endeavour comes loaded to the brim with premium features. In India, it gets an 8-inch SYNC3 touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, hands-free parking, powered driver seat, panoramic sunroof, semi-digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and upto seven airbags. The new Endeavour also gets additional features such as push-button start, powered co-driver seat and an electric tailgate as well. While the Everest gets the same set of features inside, it rides on much bigger 20-inch alloys instead of the 18-inchers seen on the Endeavour in India.
When it comes to safety, both SUVs carry a similar feature list on their respective top trims, including seven airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, ESP, hill-start assist, auto headlamps and wipers, along with front and rear fog lamps. They also get TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system), a rear camera, front and rear parking sensors and a volumetric burglar alarm system that can detect movement inside the car. Ford’s Terrain Response System is also present on both the Endeavor and the Everest for some spirited driving and off-roading.
In addition to the passive safety features, the Australian model gets a host of driver assists, including a dynamic stability control (instead of regular ESC) and emergency brake assist along with pedestrian monitoring system as well. These make the Everest better equipped than the Endeavour in terms of safety equipment. That said, the Endeavour still is the safest SUV in its segment and most omissions are due to restrictions related to radar-based safety equipment in India.
Price
The 2019 Endeavour is available in two trims (Titanium & Titanium Plus) in India. In comparison, the Australian Everest has a total of three: Ambiente, Trend and Titanium. Prices for the Everest start at AUD 47,990 (approx. Rs 24.42 lakh) for the base rear-wheel drive Ambiente and go all the way up to AUD (approx. Rs 38 lakh) for the top-spec 4X4 Titanium variant. All prices are MSP.
Meanwhile, the Endeavour in India is priced between Rs 28.19 lakh and Rs 32.97 lakh (ex-showroom). Even as the Everest is priced slightly more than the Indian Endeavour, it does get a newer engine along with driver assists to justify the slight premium. As far as India is concerned, the Endeavour is a great value for money proposition and with the launch of the facelift, it is now more affordable than before. However, we do hope that Ford introduces the new EcoBlue engine on the Endeavour as well, at least well before BSVI norms come into effect in 2020.
