Hyundai's Eon gets a new 1.0-litre engine to take on the Datsun Go in the entry-level car segment. Let's see how it stacks up
Datsun Go vs Hyundai Eon 1.0-litre

With a 0.8-litre engine under the hood, the Hyundai Eon fell short on the performance front to the recently launched Datsun Go. But Hyundai has quickly stepped up by adding a 1.0-litre kappa engine to the Eon line-up. Does it make the Eon a better rounded package now? We find out.

Powertrain

Both the Eon and the Go have three cylinder engines mated to 5-speed manual gearboxes. The 1.0-litre Eon develops 69PS of power at 6,200rpm and 94Nm of torque at 3,500rpm. The Go dishes out 68PS at a lower 5,000rpm but has 10Nm more torque - 104Nm at 4,000rpm. More torque makes it peppier especially in stop-go city conditions.

Fuel Economy

On the efficiency front, there isn’t much between the two cars. The Eon 1.0-litre returns an ARAI certified figure of 20.3kmpl and the Go comes up with 20.63kmpl.

Space

With the 1.0-litre mill, the Eon only gets an engine choice so the space is still the same as the existing car. It measures 3,495mm x 1,550mm x 1,500mm (LxWxH). The Go is much larger at 3,785mm x 1,635mm x 1,485mm (LxWxH). The Go also has a 70mm longer wheelbase and 50 litres of extra luggage space (265 litres to the Eon’s 215 litres).

Price

The Eon 1.0-litre is only available in the Magna+ variant, which is a step below the top-end version. It costs Rs 3.83 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. At Rs 3.7 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, you get a top-end Datsun Go (T). A mid-spec Go (A) will set you back by just Rs 3.46 lakh.

Features

Since the Eon Magna+ costs just Rs 13,000 more than the top-spec Go, we have compared the two variants. The Eon gets a more conventional factory fitted audio system with USB and Aux-in connectivity compared to the phone docking station that doubles up as your music system via the Aux port in the Go. Outside mirrors get internal adjustment only in the Eon. Electronic power steering, air-conditioning and front power windows are standard on both cars. The Go gets a drive computer with instantaneous and average fuel economy and also a distance to empty indicator which you don’t get in the Eon. The Go also gets a front bench seat to the bucket seats in the Eon.
