The mid-size hatchbacks segment is one of the most hotly contested in India. It offers a great balance between the affordability of entry-level hatchbacks and the upmarket feel of premium ones. The Maruti Suzuki Swift has ruled this segment for quite a while now, but with its successor arriving soon, we have kept it out of this comparo. After the Swift, the Grand i10 is the car that tops the sales figures, followed by the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Mahindra KUV100 remains the least selling car in its segment despite reaching the 50,000 cars milestone in 15 months. To change its fate, Mahindra has now launched the new KUV100 NXT, which looks less quirkier and carries better features than the car it replaces. Let’s take a look at how it stacks up against its prime rivals on paper.
Dimensions:
Mahindra KUV100 NXT | Maruti Suzuki Ignis | Hyundai Grand i10 | |
Length(mm) | 3700 | 3700 | 3765 |
Width(mm) | 1735 | 1690 | 1660 |
Height(mm) | 1655 | 1595 | 1520 |
Wheelbase(mm) | 2385 | 2435 | 2425 |
Ground Clearance(mm) | 170 | 180 | 165 |
Boot Space (litres) | 243 (expandable to 473) | 260 | 256 |
Tyre Size | 185/65 R14 or 185/60 R15 | 175/65 R15 | 165/65 R14 |
The new Mahindra KUV100 NXT has grown bigger and is now 35mm longer and 20mm wider than its predecessor. With the current dimensions, it is now identical to the Ignis in length and is the widest car among the three. The overall height of the KUV100 remains the same at 1655mm, making it the tallest. When it comes to luggage carrying capacity, the KUV100 has the smallest boot at 243 litres, but fold the rear seats down and you have an enormous 473-litre trunk, the largest in its segment.

ARAI Certified Mileage (kmpl) | TBA | 26.8 | 24.95 |
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis gets the largest engine but it isn’t the most powerful one. The power figures for all three cars are similar, but the KUV100 gets an extra 2PS of power which is delivered at lower rpm than others. The torque figures for all the three cars are identical. And among the three, the Ignis is the only one to be offered with an AMT gearbox while the KUV100 AMT is expected to launch early next year.

The Ignis is on top as far as features are concerned as it gets LED projector headlamps along with dual airbags and ABS, which are offered as standard across the range. The Grand i10 comes close second with features like rear AC vents, electrically foldable ORVMs and rear parking camera with sensors.
Prices:
Prices (Rs in Lakh) ex-showroom, Delhi | Petrol | Diesel |
Mahindra KUV100 NXT | 4.39-6.51 | 5.39-7.4 |
Maruti Suzuki Ignis | 4.56-7.01 | 6.28-8.08 |
Hyundai Grand i10 | 4.59-6.86 | 5.70-7.37 |
Mahindra has priced the KUV100 NXT quite aggressively, making it the most affordable in its segment. While the base variant, the K2, gets the smallest equipment list, the top-spec K8 variant comes with all bells and whistles. The Grand i10 is quite evenly matched to the KUV in terms of pricing and provides the best value for money at this price point. And finally, the Ignis is the most expensive car of the lot. It is fairly equipped for its price but safety is where it really makes a mark.
