Is the Hector’s competitive price tag enough to seal the deal?

MG Motor has launched the Hector at a competitive price of Rs 12.18 lakh. In fact, its prices overlap with some of the smaller Hyundai Creta’s variants. But considering the fact that MG is a new brand, it has to take on well established rivals like the Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra XUV500. Can the MG Hector take the top spot? Let’s find that out in this detailed spec comparison.

Price:

MG Hector

Tata Harrier

Mahindra XUV500

Hyundai Creta

Price (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Rs 12.18 lakh to Rs 16.88 lakh

Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 16.65 lakh

Rs 12.23 to Rs 18.54 lakh

Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15.65 lakh

The main talking point of the Hector is its price tag. Starting at Rs 12.18 lakh, it undercuts all of its rivals in the segment. A few variants overlap the Creta’s. While the top-spec diesel is priced more than the Harrier and the Creta, it undercuts the XUV500 by a comfortable margin. To know what each variant of the Hector is priced at, head here.

The MG Hector is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that’s also found in the Harrier. While the Hector produces 170PS of power, the one in the Tata has been detuned to produce 140PS. The Mahindra XUV500 has the biggest diesel engine in this comparison and produces the most amount of torque at 360Nm. The Creta has the smallest diesel engine in this company and produces the least amount of power and torque. While all four of them come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the XUV500 and the Creta can also be had with a 6-speed automatic.

Considering the Creta’s smaller displacement motor, it is the most fuel efficient here. Following the Creta is the MG Hector and the Tata Harrier. The Mahindra XUV500’s older engine is understandably the least fuel-efficient here.

Note: The Tata Harrier is only offered with a diesel engine.

The MG Hector is the longest SUV in this comparison. It has the longest wheelbase as well. But when it comes to width and height, it can’t match the Harrier or the XUV500. The Hector also boasts of the largest boot space in this comparison. The Creta is the smallest of the lot as it is a compact SUV and sits a segment lower than the other three. It must be mentioned that the Mahindra XUV500 manages to pack a third row of seats despite being shorter than the Hector.

All four SUVs get a decent amount of kit to keep you satisfied. Standard features on all SUVs include an infotainment system with Android Auto, climate control, keyless entry, push-button start-stop and cruise control. Barring the Harrier, all SUVs get a sunroof, but the MG Hector and the Hyundai are the best equipped here. The MG comes with powered front seats, a panoramic sunroof and an electronic tailgate while the Creta gets some niceties like an auto-dimming IRVM and a wireless charger. The Tata Harrier is the least equipped here and surprisingly, the Creta misses out on auto headlamps and rain sensing wipers.

The MG Hector is also the only SUV in this comparison to get connected car technology. Called i-SMART, it offers more than 50 connected features. Click here for a detailed explanation of all the features.

All SUVs here come with the safety equipment that is expected in this class. But it must be mentioned that all of them lack a feature or two. The Hector is the only one to get front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. However, it misses out on hill descent control. Apart from front parking sensors, the Tata Harrier is the only SUV to get all the safety equipment. The Creta has the least amount of safety equipment on board.

Verdict:

The Hector looks like a serious contender in the midsize SUV segment, at least on paper. It brings quite a lot to the table while also promising a peace-of-mind ownership experience. And now, all that's left to be seen is how it performs on our roads.
