Nissan Terrano : Old vs New

It has been almost two years since Nissan sold more than 1000 units of the Terrano in a single month. Intense competition, especially from the Hyundai Creta and even its own sibling, the Renault Duster, has not helped matters. Nissan claims that the new Terrano has more 22 new features which should make it more tempting than before, along with the fact that the Terrano facelift is priced similarly to the outgoing model. A detailed comparison between the new and old model should make it easier to see if the Terrano is indeed a better package than before as claimed.

Price

The 2017 Nissan Terrano is priced between Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 13.95 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. Depending on the variant, prices have increased by a maximum of Rs 25,000. For the price, the changes are limited to some cosmetic changes outside, major cosmetic updates on the inside and some new equipment. The dimensions and mechanicals of Terrano remain the same as before. 

Engine and Transmission

The Nissan Terrano can be had with either a 1.5-litre diesel engine in two performance trims or a 1.6-litre petrol motor. While the 85PS version of the diesel motor is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission, the 110PS version of the diesel motor is available either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT. The petrol engine is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission. Nissan has decided to not offer the Terrano with an AWD variant like the Renault Duster, all the variants of the Terrano are only available with a front-wheel drivetrain.

Paint options

While the overall design of the new Terrano has not changed at all as compared to before, Nissan has replaced one of the six paint options. The Sandstone Brown paint option replaces the Sterling Grey paint option, the rest of the available options include Pearl White, Sapphire Black, Blade Silver, Bronze Grey and Fire Red.

Variant wise comparison

Nissan Terrano XE

The base XE variant is only available with 1.5-litre diesel motor developing 85PS of maximum power and 200Nm of peak torque paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Though the price remains unchanged, Nissan has added some new features to the XE variant.

Highlights include the new soft touch material used on the dashboard and the backlit power-window switches. Other changes include a silver trim on the gear knob, grey-and-black interior theme and a (probably louder) dual horn.

Nissan Terrano XL

The Nissan Terrano XL is exclusively available with the 1.6-litre petrol motor developing 104PS of maximum power and 148Nm of peak torque paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The price of the Terrano XL also remains unchanged. Again, Nissan has made some changes to the variant to make it feel fresh.

Highlights here include electrically foldable ORVMs (they could only be electrically adjusted earlier) which also feature integrated indicators on the covers, black and brown interior theme with black seats and soft-touch upper dashboard insert. Other features include glossy black door trim, steering mounted infotainment controls and the dual horn. 

Nissan Terrano XL (O)

The Terrano XL (O) variant is only offered with the 1.5-litre diesel motor developing 85PS/200Nm paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The variant now costs Rs 14,000 more, here's a look at the additional equipment/features available.

Highlights include the new electrically foldable ORVMs with integrated indicators, black-and-brown interior theme with black fabric seats and, most importantly, a 7.0-inch touchscreen-based infotainment system. Other features also available include steering mounted infotainment controls, reverse parking sensors and the dual horn.

Nissan Terrano XV Premium

The top-of-the-line XV Premium variant is only available with the 1.5-litre diesel in the 110PS/245Nm performance trim and a 6-speed transmission. Prices of the variant have now gone up by Rs 25,000.

Being the fully loaded variant, the XV Premium now gets black-and-brown interior theme with matching leather seat covers, one-touch up/down driver side window with anti-pinch function, cruise control and a central-armrest for the driver. Other features also added to the variant include glossy black door trim, a chrome-tipped handbrake lever and the 7.0-inch infotainment screen. Nissan does not offer a dedicated AC unit for the rear passengers anymore.

Nissan Terrano XV Premium AMT

The Nissan Terrano is also offered with an automatic transmission equipped variant - the marginal increase in cost of Rs 60,000 over the manual variant is thanks to the company using an automated manual transmission (AMT) instead of a traditional automatic transmission. Prices have gone up by Rs 25,000 as compared to the pre-facelift model though.

The Terrano AMT variant was launched fairly late in the pre-facelift Terrano's timeline, and it had already received many of the changes which are now being offered on the rest of the variants. Highlights here include the black-and-brown interior theme with leather upholstery, glossy black door trim, soft-touch dashboard inserts, the 7.0-inch infotainment system and cruise control. Features like the one-touch driver side power window, electrically foldable ORVMs with integrated indicators, driver centre-armrest etc. were previously on offer too. The Terrano AMT is the only variant in the lineup to be offered with hill-start assist and ESP.

The Nissan Terrano has certainly become more attractive as a package now. A detailed comparison with its nearest rivals will reveal if it is actually a better buy in the segment. Stay tuned.
