The price difference between the two models comes down to just Rs 5,000, after FAME-II and state deductions

The Tork Kratos electric bike is here to slay the Indian EV space. But to do so, it has to rival (and beat) other indigenous EV offerings. Case in context, the tried-and-tested Ather 450X, which has been around for a while now and has raked in good sales numbers. So, how do these two fare against each other on paper? Here’s the answer.

The Ather 450X has been in the market for a while now, and with no substantial updates to its motor and battery, it shows its age here. Not only does the Tork Kratos R have a bigger battery and motor, it also has a shorter charging time than the Ather 450X.

The bigger battery also gives the Kratos R a higher range of 120km (claimed), around 30km more than the Ather 450X’s real-world range that we tested.

However, in today’s edition of ‘Plot Twists’, the Ather 450X actually takes 3.4 seconds to reach 40kmph from a standstill, which is 0.1 seconds faster than the Kratos R’s claimed time of 3.5 seconds. This is because of the Ather 450X’s huge weight advantage. More on that later.

Both the Kratos R and Ather 450X are quite neck-and-neck in terms of underpinnings. They’re sprung on a telescopic fork and monoshock, while rolling on alloy wheels. Speaking of alloy wheels, being a bike, the Kratos R gets 17-inch alloys against the Ather’s 12-inchers, which would give the former better stability. Its wider rear tyre will also help with cornering.

As for dimensions, it's the Ather 450X that shines, courtesy of its immense 32kg weight advantage over the Kratos R. Ather hasn’t provided the ground clearance and seat height of the 450X, but we found these aspects good enough during our test ride runs.

EVs are known to be packed with features. And these two are no different.

A digital instrument cluster, LED lights, smartphone connectivity with extensive features, fast charging, ride modes, and a reverse assist are all present on both offerings. But the Ather 450X offers a modern TFT instrument cluster with in-built turn-by-turn navigation, which is better than the LCD on the Kratos R.

The Kratos R does come with its own set of pros, though, like a USB charging port and Take Me Home lights, both absent on the Ather 450X.

Price & Verdict

Tork Kratos R

Ather 450X

Rs 1,22,999

Rs 1,28,321

(all prices ex-showroom Pune, FAME-II & State subsidies included)

Finally, let’s talk about money. After state and FAME-II benefits, the Ather 450X retails for Rs 1,28,321, a substantial Rs 5,322 more than the newer Tork Kratos R.

Sure, the Ather 450X does offer a more modern feature-set and has marginally better acceleration, but none of this really justifies the extra moolah. And for that reason, we’d recommend the Tork Kratos R…at least for now, till we swing a leg over it.
