Thankfully, the leaked model appears to remain largely faithful to the Z Proto concept in design

  • Aside from the rear lip spoiler it continues to feature the teardrop LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels and squared-off rear end from the concept.

  • Cabin is also largely unchanged with a digital driver’s display, all-black upholstery and a deep dish steering wheel.

  • Likely to be powered by  a twin-turbo V6 like the concept with manual and automatic transmission options.

  • Production model, likely to be called the 400Z.

  • Will rival the Toyota Supra.

It's been a while since we’ve heard anything about Nissan’s next-gen Z model, (likely to be called 400Z), since its concept, the Z Proto made its debut back in September 2020. Well, an image of what looks to be a production-ready model has now surfaced online. Good news, Nissan seems to have stayed with the Z Proto’s  blend of retro-styling and modern tech.

You’d be hard pressed to find any differences between the Z Proto and the model in these images, especially up front,  with a pair of teardrop LED headlights similar to the 240ZG. The silhouette is a nice homage to the original Z with a roofline that flows from the nose to the squared-off rear. Heck, even the alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips and the rectangular black bar that runs across the rear with horizontal LED tail lights looks taken from the concept. The only real difference is a small lip spoiler at the rear.

It's a similar story on the inside, with the all-black upholstery, digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system and a deep dish steering wheel with plenty of controls, borrowed from the concept. The most noticeable difference is the presence of an automatic transmission, instead of the manual gearbox in the concept.

Details on the 400Z’s powertrain are still under wraps, but we expect it to be powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine, like the Z Proto. A manual transmission should join the automatic option as standard. Expect a step up in performance over the 370Z that delivered 332PS in standard trim and 350PS in the Nismo trim. For reference, the Z Proto’s specs in the Project Cars 3 videogame showed a power output of 445PS.

Nissan is expected to confirm the next-gen Z’s name pretty soon, with a debut likely happening later this year. It will rekindle its rivalry with the Toyota Supra.
