This is it! The Suzuki Jimny 5-door variant has been spotted on test with rear doors for the first time in Europe. Coincidentally, Maruti India’s executive director has said the firm is finalising the off-roader’s India launch plans and that this will be the model to make it to our shores. At the moment, Suzuki sells the 3-door variant across the globe, which incidentally, is being built in India for exports.

As you can see in these images, the Jimny has been stretched to accommodate the extra set of doors. The 3-door Jimny currently boasts a 2250mm wheelbase, which, in the 5-door version, could be extended by around 300mm. What it brings to the table is immense practicality as rear occupants have their own set of doors for ingress and egress. The longer wheelbase also means you have more legroom in the backseat.

The added length could also affect the 5-door Jimny’s off-roading prowess, an aspect in which the 3-door model has had no match. That said, since the 5-door SUV’s wheels have been pushed to the corners just like in the smaller Jimny, and with its small overhangs, approach and departure angle should be as good as the 3-door SUV. The only place where it could fall short due to the longer wheelbase is with regard to the breakover angle.

The spy shots also offer a sneak peek inside the upcoming model’s cabin, which remains identical to the 3-door model. We also expect the 102PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, which gets a 5-speed manual ‘box, to be carried forward as well. It also gets a low-range transfer case to aid you when the going gets tough. Suzuki could also plonk in a more powerful turbo-petrol engine in the 5-door version

The Jimny, with its extra set of doors and practicality, is aimed at buyers who would like to use the off-roader on a daily-basis. When it comes to India, the SUV will lock horns with the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
