Tata Gravitas Testing Continues; Here’s What We Know So Far

• It is 63mm longer and 80mm taller than the Harrier, but is just as wide at 1894mm and has the same 2741mm wheelbase.

• Aside from the stepped roof and an upright tail gate, the Gravitas also gets new split LED tail lamps and 18-inch alloy wheels.

• It will feature an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a JBL audio system, drive modes and more.

• It will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine pushing out 170PS and 350Nm.

• It will take on the likes of the MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500 once launched.

Tata is continually testing its upcoming Gravitas as the coronavirus pandemic has delayed its launch. While the seven-seater SUV was expected to launch in mid-2020, it is now expected to debut in September 2020. While the prototype we spotted was fully camouflaged, we already know what it looks like courtesy of its showcase at Auto Expo 2020. As we inch closer to the launch, here’s a refresher of all that we know about this longer Harrier with a third row of seats. 

Design

The similarities between the Harrier and Gravitas are clear with its front end design but as we head into the side profile, the similarities stop. The Gravitas gets a stepped roof and an upright tail gate to accommodate the third row. Other notable design bits include new split LED tail lamps and 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels. In terms of dimensions, the Gravitas is 63mm longer and 80mm taller than the Harrier, but is just as wide at 1894mm and has the same 2741mm wheelbase despite the third-row bench with dedicated AC vents and cupholders.  

Cabin

While the dashboard layout is similar to the Harrier, it sports a dual-tone black-creme colour combination. It comes equipped with features like an electronic parking brake, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a semi-digital instrument cluster, steering mounted audio controls, a JBL sound system, drive modes, terrain modes, climate control and cruise control. Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera and traction control.

Powertrains

The Gravitas will be powered by the Harrier’s 170PS/350Nm 2.0-litre diesel engine  which will be paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter. Tata is unlikely to bring all-wheel-drive to the Gravitas anytime soon and the power will continue to be to the front wheels for the time being. The other possible engine option for the Gravitas at launch could be a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit.

Prices And Rivals 

Expect the Tata Gravitas to launch at prices starting from Rs 15 lakh onwards, with each variant coming at a premium of around Rs 1 lakh or more compared to the Harrier that retails from Rs 13.69 lakh  to Rs 20.25 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will take on the likes of the MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500.
