The Jimny’s Zeta variant has been spotted for the first time and it looks ever so purposeful in its entry-level trim

  • Maruti Jimny’s entry-level Zeta variant spotted for first time.
  • Rolls on cool looking steel wheels and gets halogen headlamps instead of LED projectors.
  • Base trim packs essentials including seven-inch infotainment, six airbags, and keyless entry.
  • Powered by 105PS, 1.5-litre petrol engine with standard four-wheel drive.
  • Expected to be priced from around Rs 10 lakh.

Off-roaders, in their base-spec guise, look really cool. Take the Thar or even the mighty Defender for examples. The steel rims with chunky tyres and bare-spec basics not only look their part, but are extremely purposeful. Joining the clan is the new Jimny five-door, which has been spotted in its production-spec base Zeta variant for the first time.

The base-spec Jimny sits on 16-inch steel rims that not only look fashionable but will also be able take better beating while off-roading. Then there’s the headlamps, which get halogen units instead of LEDs, resulting in low maintenance if it conks out. But apart from these two changes, the Jimny looks largely similar to the top-end model.

Step inside the Jimny five-door and you’ll be questioning yourself whether this is the base variant or not. For an entry-level model, the Jimny gets all the essentials, including a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, manual AC, keyless entry, steering-mounted audio controls, and a multi-info display.

Even in terms of safety, the Jimny gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control as well as hill hold and descent control as standard.

Powering the Jimny is a 1.5-litre petrol engine belting out 105PS and 134Nm. This engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, both gear boxes offered in both the variants. Four-wheel drive with a low range transfer case is offered as standard as well for better off-roading prowess.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is expected to go on sale in a couple of months, and prices could start from around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). It currently goes up against the three-door variants of the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, both of which will be getting five-door versions down the line.
