Aprilia was among the highlights of the 2016 Auto Expo. Not because of the MotoGP machine or the litre-class monsters that it had on display on its stall. No we aren’t saying that didn’t grab eyeballs or made many bikers droll. We are talking about the most important product in the Indian context. The Aprilia SR 150 scooter was showcased for the first time at the 2016 Auto Expo. What makes the new Aprilia scooter so important is the fact that it would be manufactured in India. This makes it the first Aprilia offering to be manufactured in India. The new SR 150 scooter will be built at the Piaggio plant at Baramati, Maharashtra where the Vespa range of scooters are manufactured. The Aprilia SR 150 will be the second scooter offering from the Italian brand for our market.
Talking about styling, the Aprilia SR 150 has a European design language which is edgy and contemporary. The sporty styling should make the SR 150 scooter a hit among the youngsters. The beaky front apron has the headlight embedded into it while the turn indicators have been placed on the handle bar.
The beefy telescopic forks and the large 14-inch diameter wheels (front and rear) do give the scooter an aggressive stance which should help it standout from its rivals. The instrument console is a rather simple affair with a twin pod analogue unit for speedometer, fuel gauge and odometer alongwith various tell tale lights. Aprilia hasn’t revealed engine specifications for the new SR 150. But for the Indian market, we feel that Aprilia will utilise the 150cc powerplant as seen on the Vespa 150 range. The air-cooled, 3-valve motor churns out 12PS and torque figure stands at 11.5Nm. Power is transmitted to the rear-wheels via a CVT transmission.

The scooter employs telescopic front forks and monoshock unit at the back to handle suspension duties. The scooter runs on 14-inch dia wheels that get wrapped around with 120/70 section tyres on both the wheels. The Aprilia SR 150 has a fuel tank capacity of 7 litres while seat height is 775mm. Braking is done by disc brake at front and drum brake at the rear. No information about the pricing of the scooter has been released yet. But we feel the Aprilia SR 150 will be priced around Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh ex-showroom in the Indian market. This makes the SR 150 the most affordable scooter from Aprilia for the Indian market.
The Aprilia SR 150 will be launched by August, 2016 in India. Currently, the Aprilia SR 150 has no competition in the Indian scooter space but we hope other manufacturers understand the potential of the 150cc scooter market and launch few products.
