Renault Lodgy

The MPV segment is growing like never before in India, and by introducing the Lodgy, Renault wants to taste the kind of success it did with the Duster. But the task at hand is not going to be an easy one for the French car maker, especially considering that it has lost the first mover’s advantage to the Toyota Innova and more recently the Honda Mobilio. Let’s find out if it does make its presence felt amongst these some tough competitors, at least as far as the specifications are concerned.

Renault Lodgy, Toyota Innova and Honda Mobilio

Space and Size:
In this segment of cars, what matters the most is the space and size. And in that regard it seems like Renault has done well. At 4,498mm and 1,682mm it falls exactly in between the Honda Mobilio and the Toyota with regards to overall length and height. But if you consider the wheelbase which directly correlates to the space inside, the Renault Lodgy is considerable longer than its rivals in discussion. At 2,810mm the wheelbase is 60mm longer than the Innova and more than 150mm longer than the Mobilio. The width too is pretty impressive and is just about 9mm narrower than the Innova. So while the Innova might seem to have a marginal edge over the Lodgy on paper, a real world test will give us a better understanding of how much space each of these models actually have.

Engine:
The Renault Lodgy as well as the Toyota Innova only have diesel powerplants whereas the Honda Mobilio has petrol as well as diesel. The Honda and the Renault come powered with a 1.5-litre diesel mill but the latter makes more power and torque. As opposed to the Mobilio’s 100PS and 200Nm, the Lodgy makes 110PS and 245Nm. In fact, like the Duster, the Lodgy too will be available in the 85PS guise. The Toyota Innova on the other hand makes 102PS and 200Nm. From among the three, the Renault Lodgy makes the most amount of power and keeping in mind that it is based on the same platform as the Duster, it should tip the scales around 1400kg which is heavier than the Mobilio but considerably lighter than the Innova.

Price and Fuel Efficiency:

No matter what segment a car falls under it has to be fuel efficient to be successful. Honda stands the tallest in this regards thanks to an ARAI claimed efficiency of 24.2kmpl for the diesel. The Toyota Innova on the other hand is the other end of the spectrum and is among one of the few cars that have made place for itself on the sales charts despite lower than competition efficiency. Toyota claims that the Innova returns an overall efficiency of 13.31kmpl. The Lodgy falls somewhere in between these two offerings with an ARAI claimed figure of 19.98kmpl for the 110PS and 21.04kmpl for the 85PS trim.

As far as the price is concerned, the Lodgy hasn’t been launched as yet but Renault says that it will be priced competitively. We expect it to come at a starting price of Rs 8 lakh for the base 85PS variant while the 110PS top-of-the-line RxZ variant will go for Rs 12 lakh. The refreshed Innova has been launched at a starting price of Rs 12.29 lakh while the top-end trim goes as high as Rs 15.81 lakh. At a starting price of Rs 6.75 lakh, the Mobilio is the cheapest of the three. With the competition in mind, if Renault does manage to place itself between the two in terms of price, they might just hit the jackpot.
