AMT has been trending in the small car market for a while now. It all started when Maruti Suzuki introduced an AMT option in the Celerio at the 2014 Auto Expo and more recently the Alto K10. Tata joined the bandwagon with the Zest sub-4 metre sedan and has now installed in its entry-level offering, the Nano GenX.
1.) Engine:
The Tata Nano Gen X sports the same engine as the original Nano. Which means it is the same two-cylinder, 624cc unit that makes 38PS on tap. But apart from being mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, it is also available with a 5-speed AMT option. As opposed to that the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 comes with the K-series all aluminium 998cc unit. In this state of tune it makes 68PS and 90Nm which is considerably higher than the Nano GenX. And surprisingly, there isn’t much of a difference in their weight either. In fact, the top-of the line Nano GenX weighs 10kg more than the top-end Alto K10. Keeping the same in mind, the difference in performance is obvious.
2.) Features:
In terms of features, both cars come pretty loaded considering the price they come at. From an electronically assisted power steering, to an infotainment system with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity, the Nano GenX has it all. It also comes with a 12v power outlet, remote central locking and more.
On the instrumentation, the Nano GenX displays, distance to empty, Average fuel consumption and a digital clock, all of which aren’t seen on the Alto K10. In fact, the Maruti Suzuki offering doesn’t even come equipped with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity. The Alto K10 though comes with tubeless tyres, which Tata should have fitted on the Nano GenX as well.
Both cars don’t come with alloy wheels, although Tata offers them as accessories. The Alto K10 as well as the Nano GenX come with front power windows and a manual air conditioner. ORVMs on the Alto K10 are internally adjustable while the Nano GenX gets the conventional externally adjustable ones. And yes, the Alto K10 boasts of 80 litre larger boot space than the Nano GenX.
3.) Price and Fuel Efficiency:
As far as fuel efficiency is concerned, for the Nano GenX claims a respectable figure of 21.9kmpl but the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 returns slightly more at 24.07kmpl. Now for the price. Tata has priced the top-end trim of the Nano GenX at Rs 2.89 lakh while the top-of-the-line Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is on sale at Rs 3.95 lakh. All prices ex-showroom Delhi.
