Ducati 1299 Panigale Superleggera

The Ducati 1299 Panigale is the flagship motorcycle from the Italian bikemaker and among the fastest superbikes on sale globally. The bike was the replacement for the Ducat 1199 Panigale and was first unveiled at the 2014 EICMA motorcycle show in Italy. Ever since its launch, the 1299 Panigale, and its various iterations, has held the mantle of being the most powerful twin-cylinder bike on sale globally. The most exclusive bike is the 1299 Panigale Superleggera – the lightest production bike in its class at 150kg (dry weight) while the twin-cylinder engine delivers 223PS with the race kit! It also holds the distinction of being the most expensive bike to ever go on sale in India with an eye-popping price tag of Rs 1.12 crore (ex-showroom) and only one unit was allotted for the Indian market from the elusive production run of just 500 units. Ducati 1299 Panigale

Ducati has now sent out a teaser video with the tag line, “When the End Tells the Whole Story.” The video gives us a fast glimpse of the 1299 Panigale and the new Superleggera and in the end says a surprise awaits on July 7th. Incidentally, on the same date, the World Superbike round at Laguna Seca in USA will be held and we expect a special final edition of the 1299 Panigale will be unveiled as the bike will be soon discontinued. The Ducati 1299 Panigale will remain an iconic motorcycle as the Italian bikemaker will be shifting to V-4 powerplant rather than the iconic L-Twin configuration.

The shift to V-4 powerplant can be credited to the new change of rules which plans to limit engine displacement of engines to 1,000cc. Ducati has had to cover up the jump in power of its rivals by increasing its engine displacement and feels that it has reached the peak power output for a twin-cylinder configuration and it will have to add more cylinders to be competitive. Ducati already has a V-4 powerplant in its MotoGP machine and we expect the learning from the premiere class of racing to be used in the new powerplant. The Ducati 1299 Panigale replacement will be unveiled at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show later this year but we can’t wait to see Ducati’s parting gift to the beautiful 1299 Panigale.
